Streets Of Rage Series

Excerpt from Genesis Game Guide by The Scribe

NAME: Streets of Rage series (3 titles)
AUTHOR/VENDOR: Magical/Sega
RELEASED: 1991
TYPE: Fighting
LANGUAGE: English and Japanese

PREMISE: Axel, Adam and Blaze - ex-cops, the solution to punk
pollution. The city's a war zone, and they're going out
two at a time to give the gangs a kick in the guts. This
is the ultimate in street combat. These fighters are
martial arts maniacs with a battery of 40 individually
controllable attacks - including jabs, head butts, and
overhead kicks. (box promo for first game)

IMPRESSIONS: Although eclipsed by its later sequels, [the original]
sports more moves and variety and has the techno
soundtrack that made composer Yuzo Koshiro famous. The
second game adds one more player for a total of four,
plus new moves for everyone and a soundtrack that is
every bit as awesome as the first one. The third and
final entry replaces one character and adds two hidden
ones - no platform fighter before or since has offered
better variety or gameplay. Too bad the music isn't as
good, because some of the tracks are just plain awful.
(compiled from the original Rage Games reviews)

VARIATIONS: These games were originally released in Japan under the
title Bare Knuckle. It is reported that the Japanese
originals are more violent than the American releases.

Streets of Rage (1991, aka Bare Knuckle, English/Japanese
                    selectable - set console accordingly)
Streets of Rage 2 (1992, aka Bare Knuckle 2, English/
Japanese selectable - set console accordingly)
Streets of Rage 3 (1994, aka Bare Knuckle 3)

A Final Fight clone only in the basic style of game play. No other side scrolling fighter that I have played can match the Streets of Rage series. The characters are well designed (Blaze especially), the game play is smooth in most parts, and the music is some of the best every produced by the Megadrive/Genesis sound chips. No matter which of the three you decide to play you'll end up having fun.

Streets of Rage 1 - This game has some really good graphics for it's time and the moves are awesome. And soundtrack is out of this world! It's definately above normal genesis music.

Streets of Rage 2- Streets of rage 1 with more characters better enemies and better stages :)

Streets or Rage 3 - Fun, but not as good as part 2, music isn't that great in this one either, waaaaa.

I'd give the series as a whole a 9.

Oh yeah, Streets of Rage...

Bashed it in the beginning of being such a Final Fight rip-off.
It had pretty moves though and that devastating bazooka. Best move was the jump around to the back 'n suplex!!
The stage one soundtrack is still in my head..sweet.

Pt.2 had a lil' bit of StreetFighter in it. (Axel's Dragon Punch) Played this one the most. Better than pt.1.

When I saw pt.3 I was impressed. It had the same feel as Eternal Champions. And the Kangoroo was fun too. But I completed it in 2p mode the first time I played it :(

Overall, part 2 stands out.

A very popular and well known set of side scrolling beat-em-up games for the Sega Genesis, with the same principle as many arcade based variations such as Final Fight.

Streets of Rage 1 was a pretty simple affair, with each of the three characters being able to throw a punch or a kick, or a combination of punches - as well as throwing the various baddies (and other players) across the landscape. You could also call upon a special attack, which involved a police car appearing and firing napalm death at all enemies on screen. A simple game in premise, but very fun and addictive to play.

Streets of Rage 2 was a big improvement in my opinion, and my favorite out of the three. A shuffle around of characters and a few additions brought the number of hero's up to 4, all of which have marked differences. Some new special attacks were added to the game which could be performed by pressing the A button, these spiced up the action no end. Graphics were also clearer and more defined in this version.

Streets of Rage 3 now, I think by this time most people had got a little bored of the same repetitive walk-along-bash-enemies approach, and sadly this second sequel didn't really bring any new changes, just a few new characters and slightly better graphics. However, when all that is said and done, SOR3 was still a very fun game to play, with the usual easy "pick up and play" approach of the prequels.

Great selection of fighting games that no Genesis owner should miss out on.

As a clone of final fight, this game is your best choice on genesis!

not only the graphics is great (compare to the games at those years), the sounds also meet the senorio. The game play is easy and with 2-player mode.

For the version one, the easy in game make it to become the favourite of many kids(like me:-)).

For the version two, there are many improved graphics and control, include a new face, a great new move:forward +forward + punch

For the version three, there are improved in graphics, weapons skill, also the hardness.

The version three of this game seems to be too hard, if that's not, my favourite would be it instead of the verseion two

SOR would be your all time favourite on genesis!

I only really have the 1st and 2nd games in this series to compare. But from what I see all the games have the same basic premise (That being to walk around and eliminate all the baddies). The game certianly is very much like the Final Fight series and I am sure this is where the inspiration came from.

Only differences not yet discussed above are that the sounds are way better on the 2nd game than the 1st. Also the music to me is better on the 2nd game as well. However, the first stage music from the 1st game is probably the best track in that game.

There are all sorts of graphic differences in the games. For starters the first game had tiny character sprites and very little use of color shading in many area. The perspective in these games has always seemed backwards to the direction of movement to me, but that is just me.

SOR2 also has the same background graphics for the most part but with more animation and activity going on. However, the character sprites are way out of proportion to the enviroment graphics. So everyone comes out looking like they are 15 feet tall or something. They were trying to add more detail in SOR2 on the player sprites...but making them larger only looks awkward.

SOR3: again I don't own this on myself (Goes for some insane pricing around here locally). But from emulation and in other screenshots. It looks to be the best of the bunch graphically in that there is more detail and shading added in the backgrounds. also the animation overall is much smoother. The player sprites are back down to a smaller size like that used in the first game.

Overall SOR2 is probably the best for what I own and have really played. But in emulation I do prefer to play the 3rd one since I find it more pleasing on the eyes. The music isn't as good as the first 2 games but I can forgive that since I am not paying that much attention to it anyway when I am grabbing a pipe and smacking some thug up side the head anyway. :-)

I have to disagree with this being a final fight clone.
The game itself plays more in a double dragon vein which also was a side-scrolling beat em' up.

On with the review.......

Pt.1
Super game even by today's standards IMHO. Lots of onscreen action, Great music, Intresting bosses (What's up with the Ultimate Warrior dude???) and the ability to do team attacks ;)

Scale Score (1-10) 8.6

Pt.2
Take the original game, make the characters bigger, bosses Bigger, add more moves, more weapons, more enemies, more plot, and individual supers, and you have SOR:2! The hardest boss, as well as the coolest is Shiva the martial arts dude right before Mr. X.

Scale Score (1-10) 9.9

Pt.3
None yet, Trying to accuire the game

The Streets of Rage sidescrolling "beat-em-up" series remains one of my favorite series for the Genesis. I realize that it's been classified as a "Final Fight Clone", in various instances, but with that aside, the series does need to be respected. The first game is probably my favorite, which seems to be the least popular of the three. It contains the best music, the most innovative of moves, and it's just, quite simply, the most fun to play. The sequel is my second favorite, featuring more characters and whatnot. The third, however, pretty much misses the boat. Sure, it's probably the most inventive of the three in terms of stages, but its rehashed graphics, horrible music, and just plain boring gameplay---at least in terms of the other two games---leave my mouth with quite an empty taste. Don't get me wrong, though; it's still quite the standalone game. At any rate, the series is superb.

The best of the game are the combos you can do to your enemies and all the movements you can do. Also you can make a combined movement if you have a partner: try to catch your partner from behind, and he can push C button to make some kicks.

The Music:

Streets of Rage 1 : I found had the catchiest music, It will be in your head for a while. Some how it reminds me of Ninja Turtles the Movie ?? Not Techno, but more early 90's pop dance RnB. GOOD GOOD GOOD!

Streets of Rage 2 : Getting obviously Techno influenced and you know what, It rocked my ass off! In some ways as catchy as the first, but with a less traditional appraoch... It's Good!

Streets of Rage 3: WOAH! This game had abstract music, it was abstract and had HEAVY beats. There has never been another game in the 16 bit era that pushed the Limits in music like this one did. This could have been a real cd, untouched.
