Re: Streets Of Rage Series (Score: 1)
    by CrossBow (crossbow@emuviews.com) on Thursday, 23 August 2001 @ 11:58:59

I only really have the 1st and 2nd games in this series to compare. But from what I see all the games have the same basic premise (That being to walk around and eliminate all the baddies). The game certianly is very much like the Final Fight series and I am sure this is where the inspiration came from.

Only differences not yet discussed above are that the sounds are way better on the 2nd game than the 1st. Also the music to me is better on the 2nd game as well. However, the first stage music from the 1st game is probably the best track in that game.

There are all sorts of graphic differences in the games. For starters the first game had tiny character sprites and very little use of color shading in many area. The perspective in these games has always seemed backwards to the direction of movement to me, but that is just me.

SOR2 also has the same background graphics for the most part but with more animation and activity going on. However, the character sprites are way out of proportion to the enviroment graphics. So everyone comes out looking like they are 15 feet tall or something. They were trying to add more detail in SOR2 on the player sprites...but making them larger only looks awkward.

SOR3: again I don't own this on myself (Goes for some insane pricing around here locally). But from emulation and in other screenshots. It looks to be the best of the bunch graphically in that there is more detail and shading added in the backgrounds. also the animation overall is much smoother. The player sprites are back down to a smaller size like that used in the first game.

Overall SOR2 is probably the best for what I own and have really played. But in emulation I do prefer to play the 3rd one since I find it more pleasing on the eyes. The music isn't as good as the first 2 games but I can forgive that since I am not paying that much attention to it anyway when I am grabbing a pipe and smacking some thug up side the head anyway. :-)
