Sonic The Hedgehog Series

Excerpt from Genesis Game Guide by The Scribe

NAME: Sonic the Hedgehog series (8 titles)
AUTHOR/VENDOR: Sonic Team/Sega
RELEASED: various
TYPE: various
LANGUAGE: English

PREMISE: Who would have thought that a fast-paced arcade game
about a smart-alecky blue hedgehog and his efforts at
preventing the evil Dr. Robotnik from mechanizing the
world would have turned into the hit series that it
became? The original is a legend as far as arcade games
go, the sequels are for the most part just as good or
better, and the venture finally provided Sega with
something it desperately needed at the time - a new
mascot. Every Sega plaform since has had at least one
                  Sonic game.

IMPRESSIONS: Colorful graphics, catchy tunes, and fast gameplay are
the standard hallmarks of the Sonic series. These
titles remain as popular as they ever were, with each
new entry adding its own particular twists. The first
is a must, and so are most of the others.

VARIATIONS: Sonic the Hedgehog (1991, the one and only original, and
the game that was most responsible for the popularity
of the platform - the Japanese version has scrolling
                    clouds in the background)
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (1992, same idea as before but adds
a second player-controllable character in Tails the
Fox - this was the most successful G/MD title ever
produced, according to Video Gamers Online - the beta
version, which has been recently unearthed, includes
levels that didn't make it into the commercial release)
Sonic Spinball (1993, a pinball game designed around the
Sonic franchise that has all the visual appeal of the
platform games, but somehow just doesn't wash - there
are two different versions, with slight musical
variations being the only notable difference)
Sonic Crackers (1994, an in-house beta developed by Sega
to test several new concepts - only two stages are
playable, but this was the first Sonic game to employ
the "bungee attack mode" that would be more fully
realized in Knuckles Chaotix for the 32X - there are
also other elements that were later used in other Sonic
games, isometric perspective being a notable one)
Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (1994, the last in the commercially
released series of 2D platformers - not designed for
speed as before, you encounter a boss at the end of
every level, Sonic was redesigned to give him a more
fierce look, Knuckles puts in his second appearance
in a Sonic game, and has only six very large stages -
the MegaDrive release apparently has some different
music than the American release, such as when Knuckles
                    first appears)
Sonic and Knuckles (1994, Sonic squares off against Dr.
Robotnik's newest henchman, Knuckles the enchindia -
                    this employed a special "lock-on" pass-through design
that allowed you to plug in Sonic 2 or 3 and play them
as either Sonic or Knuckles - you're in for a bit of a
surprise if you try using Sonic 1 with it - this is
considered by some Sonic fans as the best of the
                    original 16-bit side scroller series)
Sonic 3D Blast (1996, also known as Flicky's Island in
Europe - Sonic travels to the island of the Flickies
to save them from Dr. Robotnik - in part inspired by
old Sega platform arcade game Flicky - the first
commercially released Sonic game to make use of
isometric perspective, which takes a lot of adjustment
                    for fans of the series)
Sonic Classics 3-in-1 (1996, combines the first two
Sonic Games and Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine into
                    a single cart)

Also released around the same time was Kunckles Chaotix
for the 32X and Sonic CD for the Sega CD. As a side
note, Dr. Robotnik is known as Dr. Eggman in Japan due to
his appearance, and the nickname has been quickly
accepted over on this side of "the pond."

Sonic CD was a gem though, but that's another story..:) (Super Saiyan Sonic haha)

Overall, a very good line-up with Spinball being a fun spin-off. Playing Sonic 2 with Knuckles is definately worth a try...

Okay here we go...

My absolute favorite is still the first Sonic 1 and here is why.

The first game I was ever introduced to was Altered Beast on the Genny. It looked cool but I wasn't that impressed with how choppy the graphics seemed to look. Also the sound was better than anything I had heard but it simply just didn't impress me near as much as the look of the Genesis itself did.

Then a few days later my same buddy calls me over to check out a new game on it. I wasn't looking all that forward to going but did so out of curiosity and because it was cool to hang out anyway. What I say made my jaw drop to the floor!

Yeap he had just gotten Sonic 1 and had just hooked the Genesis into his stereo system in his room. To put it mildly I was impressed just upon hearing "SEGAaaa" at the opening. Then when I actually saw all the bright colors and the main theme track I was hooked. I stayed over late that night and come over almost everyday (which pissed him off eventually I am sure) just to play that game. Sonic 1 really stands out as the one game which proved to me what the Genny was really capable of.

I now have all the Sonics minus Spinball (Not a real sonic game if you ask me) and i don't have 3 or Sonic and Knuckles. But out Sonic 1, 2, and Sonic 3D I still love the music in Sonic 1 best. The graphics are nice in Sonic 2 but tales is annoying in my opinion. Sonic 3D looks great for being 3D but the quality of the graphics just aren't as good as they were in a 2D platform world. Sonic 3D does have several fantastic music tracks of it's own. But nothing like the first and original Sonic 1. I need to get the 3rd one so that my whole outlook will be changed on these games. Graphically 3 is the shining star. Also the music in 3 from what I have heard of it, is pretty much just as good as the first one if not better on some tracks. I so need to get that one.

They loved you so much they sent their hedgehog, sonic to die for you! he died for you on the last level man! he used his last life for you to beat the final boss so you could be saved! the book of sega 3:16 says; "For sega so loved the video game market that they gave their only begotten hedgehog and that whosoever played his games would not be bored but have everlasting fun." so all you need to do is goto sega and ask them to forgive you of your sins for rejecting them and favoring nintendo or something...*sings* he gave his furrr so i could liiive...Sonic is great!

They are all fast, brilliant games that are worth buying (With the exception of Sonic 3D possibly). They have virtually endless replay value (Especially Sonic 2!).

Sonic 2 was also a good game. The way you could so easily go to level select and then be super sonic, and then easily become him with debug mode. Also the 2 player verus mode was a good and on. It challenging and that mode is very unpredictible. So I say it is another classic.

The 2 player sonic racing was good on it with the time attack and with beat the best score. Also with easier bonus rounds I could get to be super sonic super fast.

Sonic is, in my opinion, the best series. Out've all of them, I'd say that the original game is best. The graphics are better than any of the other game, for it's more 3D look, and if you see it on the Sega CD, it'll look more impressive. I also think positive on Sonic 3D Blast. It was rushed, the graphics are neat, and it really could've been the game to save the Genesis if it was worked on more.

The Sonic Cartoon also airs on Toon Disney, in which, like most times, they insist on using Robotnik and Mobius over Eggman and Earth.

I have to say that Sonic 2 is the best game of the lot, not Sonic 3 + Knuckles as often said. Sonic 3 is a lot of style over substance and is simply not as enjoyable as Sonic 2. There is a lot more "interactive" sections which take some of the direction away from the player.

Sonic 1 is a close second, but because of the valuable tool that is the spin dash, Sonic 2 beats it. Sonic 1 had great level design which has a lot more subtlety then the rest of the series.

Let me end this with a childish complaint: I want Sonic Jam!

I recieved Sonic 1 in the 6 games pack Christmas '97. The other games were good, but Sonic just blew me away. It was easily the best game of it's time, but then Sonic 2 came along. It was Sonic 1, only 100% better. The graphics, the gameplay, the sound...it was all superb. I have to admit I have never played S&K, but I have played Sonic Spinball. I bought it at Bury Market for £2. It was totally different from any other Sonic game, and to me it was definetly the hardest. The latest game was Sonic 3D: Flickies Island. It was a platformer, but instead of side scrolling, it was a diagonal perspective. It was slightly easier than S2, and I still play all Sonic games to this day.

I remeber playing this (with a code) for about 20 seconds...not worth the time and trouble it took to input the code!

What's the point of a Sonic game that's just special stages? I always tried to avoid the special stages on Sonic because I found them really annoying.

Again wonderful concept and blend between adventure and pinball, one major flaw NO SAVE POINTS!!!!! I demoed the game at SEARS® for about 5 seconds and said to my mother that I "had to have it!" boy I got it alright. Got it home and played for about 5 minutes then never again.

Many annoying hours trying to get past the first level! Wonderful game, graphics but due to the slow takeoff from a standstill you found yourself backing up to get a "running start" at the smallest of hills!!!! other than this Minor annoyance the speed of sonic overall in the later games was reduced to give a player a more fluid feel.

I don't know if this was already posted, but in Sonic 2 there is a way to get in to the unfinished hidden palace zone with a game genie. Use the code :ACLA-ATD4 and get level select, and debug as well. Select Death Egg Zone and hold A + press start.

Graphics: The best the Sega Mega Drive ever saw. You can tell this was the last ever SMD. But I beleive that the name 'Sonic Isometric View' would be a more fitting name.
****
Sound: The new music is great but its not like the orginal Sonic game's well known music.
****
Game play: Its really nice having a decent looking 3D platformer on the SMD before it went forever, but the control are hard to get used to. Colleting all of the Filkies can be very annoying somtmes too.
****
Storyline: It has one, even with a (slightly) animated intro, but it sucks.
***
Life span: Not having a save feture like Sonic 3, the lifespan shortens.
****
Overall: A great fun game but it is not entirly true to its orginal. Colleting the emeralds gets you nowhere. Seeing a super Sonic in 3D would of been great. But then again, it IS Sonic in 3D!

I loved the first Sonic, it was the first Genesis game I ever played. Sonic 2 was okay, but Sonic 3 + Sonic & Knuckles was much better. Sonic CD was great as it combined CD Audio with the already popular Sonic. However, my enjoyment of Sonic the Hedgehog stops with the Genesis games (Sonic R was average). The Dreamcast versions of Sonic really suck in my opinion, it's gotten too fruity.
