Excerpt from Genesis Game Guide by The Scribe

NAME: Thunder Force series (3 titles)
AUTHOR/VENDOR: Technosoft
RELEASED: various
TYPE: Shooter
LANGUAGE: English

PREMISE: This this the shooter series for the Genesis that got a
a lot of attention when it came out. It's your basic
                  blast-any-thing-that-moves sci-fi side-scrolling shooter,
but with a reputation for gaming excellence.

IMPRESSIONS: Fairly decent R-Type clones that get better as the series
advances. Decent weapons, impressive graphics, intense
                  gameplay.

VARIATIONS: The first game in the series, Thunder Force, is not
available separately for the Genesis. There is also a
derivant called Thunder Spirits that was made for the
SNES, although it is generally acknowledged to be an
                  inferior product.

Thunder Force 2 (1989, one of the few sequels that
incorporated its ancestor into itself - the top-down
down sequences are reminsecent of Bosconian, the side-
scroll sequences smack strongly of R-Type)
Thunder Force 3 (1990, the top-down view is now gone,
leaving only the side-scroll game - better graphics
and a slightly enhanced weapons system)
Thunder Force 4 (1992, also known as Lightning Force -
best of the lot, but still not as good as R-Type)

The III version of game is my favourite, It have good graphcs, optimum game speed, exciting sound, easy control, while there would be a draw back is that this game is hard to finish... I can only use emulator to go over the game.

This series is one I keep coming back to on the genesis! overall TF3 Is my favorite. LF may look prettier, but IMHO 3 plays a heck of a lot better. The music is top notch and weapon selection is good. I like this series sooooo much I would say it is better than R-Type. The enemies are big and colorful, and usually don't get lost in the backgrounds. Pick these up if you see them, You definately wont be disappointed!!!

This is, IMHO, better than R-Type. It's fast, the graphics and music are superb, the gameplay is exhilarating (yes, I do know what I'm saying!) and the difficulty is insane! But it's still fabulous!

The best rocking Shoot'em up ever! It was so good that there were no other Shoot'em-up releases after it, since no one could defeat it and its rocking music!!

BTW, I've finished it in maniac level (you get it after having finished very hard) w/out any tricks, cheats or 99 ships, so quit crying and start playing!!! ;)

Its a good series with the good graphics, however the IV version is only ok as compared to its preceeding rival. The version V is alright, as compared, with the III as well. Over all the V has the superior weapons technology with the Overweapon power system, but the standard Airframe "STYX" appears to be the most potent model. Game play, III and V are the recomended, IV is the advanced player model, recomend to use all of the weapons all of the time for each situation moreso than other versions!

I have the carts for 2 and 4 in the series, the second one was the first game I ever beat on the megadrive, the fourth one I can't get very far in but it is also a good game. Purists would probably disagree, but I love the second one the best.

Comparing LF to R-Type is like comparing apples to oranges!

Rage Games can kiss my ass!
