Excerpt from Genesis Game Guide by The Scribe

NAME: Virtua Racing
AUTHOR/VENDOR: Sega
RELEASED: 1994
TYPE: Racing
LANGUAGE: English

PREMISE: Port of the phenomenal hit 1992 arcade racing game, in
which you get to drive a Formula One race car around
several different tracks. This is the most sophisticated
polygonal-based title available for the platform, due
largely to its internal "SVP" chip (Super Virtual Play) -
which is actually a Hitachi SH1 RISC processor in
disguise. Because of this, it will not work with the 32X
                  adaptor as a "pass-through" cart.

IMPRESSIONS: Is it impressive? Hell, yes - probably the most
impressive racing game for the platform. Is it limited?
Yes - only one car and three tracks. Does it have its
problems? Certainly, as polygonal engines of the day
were rather limited, which means that it is really rough
around the edges and has absolutely NO texture mapping.
Is it still cool? Yes ... unless you can get your hands
on the superior 32X version. To quote Steve Sharp from
an early review, "I actually think it's a pretty good
conversion, but I also agree it isn't worth the price
                  tag."

VARIATIONS: For more information on the background of Virtua Racing,
see the intro to the 32X section. It should be noted
that the operating frequency of the SVP chip often
causes problems with certain older-model cordless phones
and may cause them to ring for no apparent reason.

The review mentions "no texture mapping" on Virtua Racer. As this was a first generation 3D game, I don't think even the arcade version had texture mapping; Sega let the polygons do the talking. The same is true for the original Virtua Fighter.

I own the actual cart. I didn't pay $100 for it. I got it from Funcoland for $30. The only problem is that is doesnt display the polygons. Not sure why.

VR Racing on the Genesis is the best driving game for the system. Much mention has been made to the jagged graphics..and no texture maps. But the arcade didn't have actual texture maps either. The graphics are true to the arcade in that the levels and all the background stuff is present. It may not look as sharp or as pretty but it is there. Something that I will mention is that if you don't have the 32x add-on for your genesis, then this is the racing game to get. Currently it can be found for fairly inexpensive (I see them around town for as little as 5.99 a cart).

The music is dead on to the arcade as near as I can tell. The sound effects are very weak however, the voice samples used are of poor quality and are sometimes difficult to understand amist the booming music between checkpoints.

Interesing observation that I have noticed is that the Genesis version of VR Racing is actually smoother and faster overall in feel than the 32x version. The 32x version looks just like the arcade and sounds as well. But the action can sometimes slow down a bit when lots of cars are together. It is too bad more games weren't done with the SVP technology as VR Racing is really a gem for the Genesis.

This game is so cool I played it over and over for weeks few years ago (the cartridge wasn't mine and I still didn't manage to get it somewhere).

It's technically brilliant (best looking polygonal game for Mega Drive, of course), hard to master and very fun. 10/10

Virtua Racing is the best driving game for all the 16 bit systems, it only has 3 courses, but the quality of them is not usual. It's a shame that emulators don't get it to work yet because of the undocummented svp chip but i hope this game to be emulated sometime.I bought this game when it was released and the graphics leave me impressed for its time.
It also were the Stunt Racers for the Super Nintendo but it was rubish!, of course 10/10

I can just remember playing this game for the first time on the Megadrive and I can say this - wow.

The graphics are fantastic for the time. They are 3D unshaded polygons all the way. The extra feature they added was lovely - GAMEPLAY.

This game is possibly the best (Or second best, with exception of Monaco GT) Driving game on the Megadrive, and one of the few games that I still look impressed at when I play.

This game was wonderful in its day, yet plagued with compatibility problems with the 32x. Virtua Racer Deluxe brings alot more to the table than this cart a more smooth feel...I always hated the fishtale aspect sheesh realistic...hardly! Good arcade take it for A lap ...and I mean one, the put the controller down and run away as quickly as possible with the wonderful memory!

It's a really fun game! 6 tracks if you include the mirror tracks. Yes, back then there was no texture mapping, but Virtual Racing makes up for it in fun. The annoucer guy is funny sounding, and music comes on when you get through a checkpoint, neat little ditties. I even remember playing this in the arcade, it was a blast. The genesis conversion isn't bad, it's just the svp made the game 100 bucks way back in 94' so it didn't sell too well. Also note that the cartridge is twice the size of a normal cartridge, and even bigger than an EA cartridge. That's the chip right there :) The best way to play this game is on a nomad! The graphics look a lot smoother and it's just cool to see 3d on a handheld system. Go play this game! I give it a 8.5 You can also get the Deluxe version for 32x which adds some more cars and tracks. The saturn version is the best one with the most cars and tracks, but...it's saturn! And Sega let Time Warner do it so it doesn't feel like Virtual Racing. They could have added textures, but they didn't. Reminds of how Sega let their Shinobi game get handled by Vic Tokai on Saturn.
