Excerpt from Genesis Game Guide by The Scribe

NAME: Wonderboy series (3 titles)
AUTHOR/VENDOR: WestOne
RELEASED: various
TYPE: Platform
LANGUAGE: English, Japanese, and Portuguese

PREMISE: A popular series of Japanese arcade game conversions
featuring the superdeformed warrior Wonderboy and his
cute green-haired girlfriend as they undertake various
quests, visit strange lands, and battle terrifying
                  monsters.

IMPRESSIONS: Wonderboy has a long legacy going back to the 8-bit
systems such as the Sega Master System, and I understand
that he also put in an appearance on the 32-bit Sony
Playstation. I can't for the life of me see why these
games are so popular - to me, they're just cute-looking
platformers - but even I'll admit that Wonderboy in
Monsterworld is a game worth considering. Eidolon is a
Wonderboy fan and he can't say enough about them, so
there you go. I guess the best thing to do is let you
                  judge for yourselves.

VARIATIONS: The first two games in the series are not available for
the G/MD. They are available for the Sega Master System
and various other 8-bit platforms from the period.

I note in passing that the Portuguese releases of certain
titles (Brazilian market) transformed Wonderboy into a
deformed-looking squirrel named Turma de Monica. That
was the only real change other than various proper names.

Wonderboy 3 - Monster Lair (1990, aka Monster World 1,
                    Bikkuriman World)
Wonderboy 4 (aka Monster World 2) is not available for
                    the G/MD.
Wonderboy 5 - Monster World 3 (1991, aka Wonderboy in
Monsterworld, Turma de Monica na Terra Dos Monstros -
the best known of the series due to its incorporation
of adventure game elements, this was ported to quite
a large number of 8-bit and 16-bit game consoles - an
English version has long been rumored to exist, but I
cannot confirm it at this time)
                  Wonderboy 6 - Monster World 4 (1994, a radical departure
as far as the premise goes in that it features
Wonderboy's girlfriend and was released only in Japan
                    - many fans consider it to be the best of the series
                    despite the language problem)

Ahhh...Wonderboy. I really wish the scribe had gone into more detail as to why he considers this game the one to get. The graphics are "cute" according to him. "Cute" in this definition means that they are cartoony in nature. Most of the cartoon like graphic games do not feature the most impressive visuals. But they aren't supposed to so I actually like the uncluttered look of the Wonderboy in Monsterworld. The sound is basic but adequate and the music is catchy in some levels. The game is a little on the too easy side in many places but this can be overlooked by the RPGishness which is present in the game. There are shops to visit and secrets to explore through out. I figure this is one of the staple classics that everyone with a slight interest in platform rpg type games should have.

A classic, the only game other than the original worth playing. BTW I beat the original 8-bit version. Me and my sister left the Master system on for over a day to finish the 400 trillion fagillion levels. The ending? Wonderboy's girlfriend comes out and says 'Thank you for saving me Wonderboy!' her alligator arms moving back and forth rather abruptly. Over 30 friggin' hours of straight gameplay for that? ARE YOU KIDDING ME!?

Ah, this takes me back...although I wuold still love to get a copy of the Brazillian version...as well as a copy of the Brazillian Thundercats game on the SMS...the main chipmunk-esque character is apparently a popular Brazilian cartoon star. Actually, since the Pocket Monsters game is apparently a Wonderboy hack, maybe the hackers got the idea from this game! Or maybe I need more sleep.

The best is Wonderboy 6 (Monster World 4) but is has not been released else than in Japan...
It is really cool, nice graphics, good music. Instead of wonderboy, the hero is his girlfriend. It 's quite a change ;)
I highly recommend it to those who can have it (e.g. on an emulator of genesis)

The wonderboy games are a blast! Personally, I've only ever finished the 3rd one, but it still left me begging for more! They're platform-rpgs (similar to Valis, and to an extent, Actraiser). There are different variations of magic, weapons (ooh, SPEAR!), and armor, too! I reccomend this to anyone who likes this type of game!

Wonder Boy in Monster World is a great game with very colorful graphics. The gameplay reminded me a bit of a NES game called 'Faxanadu'.

This game sucks. WB2, WB3, and the American released Genesis WB (along with the Jap only adventure game) are all great, but I'd recommend avoiding this unless you like WB1 a lot better than all the others.

I have two things to say: the first is that I loved the game Monster World 4. The second is that I need some help: In the game exist a cheat that I don't know how can I make it. It's about the treasure chests that gives gold. I was at the Mute tower (2nd stage) and opened a treasure chest. I made some moves at directional button and acidentally make the cheat: I was with 700 gold (example) and suddenly, after the cheat, I was with more than 7000! If anyone can help me, send your comment at this site, then I can see it later. Thank you.

This is probably my favorite game for the Genesis. It is not to easy and not to difficult. I have played this game for many, many hours. The graphics are not the best, especially when compared to games of today, but it has what most of the newer games do not - GAMEPLAY!
