Excerpt from Genesis Game Guide by The Scribe

NAME: Red Zone
AUTHOR/VENDOR: Zyrinx/Scavenger
RELEASED: 1994
TYPE: Shooter
LANGUAGE: English

PREMISE: Madman Ivan Retovitz rips off an arsenal of Soviet
nuclear weapons and threatens to transform the world into
a radioactive desert. As the leader of three covert
commandos, you must pilot the AH-64B Apache fighter
chopper and traverse the underground bunkers to destroy
                  this nuclear madman.

IMPRESSIONS: The promos for this game advertised a lot, and it
delivers. This is probably the most sophisticated
top-down arcade shooter in existence for the console.
Gameplay isn't bad, either. This one's a must if only
for the fluid pseudo-3D animation, which rivals that of
                  the Vectorman series.

VARIATIONS: Hard Wired (beta test/demo version, public domain - the
FMV sequences are arranged differently and are lacking
the animated cutscenes from the final product, and only
a portion of the final product's gameplay is present.)

Right from the beginning I knew Red Zone was special. When first boot it up, you'll notice a cool looking fmv(yes full motion video on genesis!). Sure it's all in red, but it looks really good. When you play the actual game, you pilot a helicopter ala strike series. But this game is cool because it's top down and has 3d effects scrolling effects that are down right awesome. When you get to one of the complexes, or places you have to land, your view switches to the player (3 characters to play as) and you'll notice something pecular....It looks like Grand Theft Auto! This is because Red Zone integrates a 2d top down perspective with 3d buildings that change perspective as you move around. In this mode, the game is similar to Chaos Engine with a top down shooting aspect. The music is nifty and changes the main theme with each mission. When you're on the map screen, you can zoom in on the map and find where enemies are. Sure Red Zone borrows from two games in particular, but it does it very good. I recommend you go out and take this game for a spin. Be warned though, the game is tough! I give it a 9.

i agree with hiryu, THE GRAPHICS ARE AMAZING! not to mention the FMV intro! also, in game play is very 3-D. its a rather challenging game like desert/jungle strike with top-down kind of play. you go around blasting enemies. the in-house levels are really great with the 3-d special effects. the graphics really give a plus to the gameplay. other than graphicly, the game is also fun in playability, and is really good if you like hard games! definatly try this!

This has some rather good conrol, for a 16-bit game, very responsive, very good looking, very fun. Worth it if you can find it!

A very good game, too. But not as good as the "Strike" Series from EA. But that doesn't matter, because the Strike Series is genre reference. I'll give this game a 8,5 - watch the intro !

Great graphics don't always make a good game. This is one of those games. Sure it looks good but the control is the biggest factor that kills this game, and to add more insult to injury, the game is boring and hard.

Awesome Graphics, Mind Blowing FMV sequences and top notch Techno Music Tracks.
