NAME: Uncharted Waters series (2 titles)
AUTHOR/VENDOR: Koei
RELEASED: various
TYPE: RPG
LANGUAGE: English and Japanese

PREMISE: Eighty years ago, your great-grandfather was lost at sea
on a mission for King John I of Portugal while questing
for the legendary kingdom of Prester John. Since then,
the Alcobaca family has become the subject of public
scorn and ridicule, and you have bitter memories of a
poor and difficult childhood. You are an adult now, and
have managed to rebuild the family resources to the point
where you no longer live in poverty. The time has come
for you, Lord Alcobaca, to follow in your sire's wake and
sail the high seas in an effort to restore your family's
honor and status to its former glory.

IMPRESSIONS: An original series of historical simulations from the
acknowledged masters of the genre. The first one is only
mildly interesting, but the second one is fantastic and
makes a great counterpoint to MicroProse's Pirates! Gold.

VARIATIONS: This series was originally released in Japan under the
                  name Daikoukai Jidai.

Uncharted Waters (1993, aka The Sea Prince, mediocre in
everything but the plot - you might want to skip unless
you want the "historical depth" behind the second game)
Uncharted Waters - New Horizons (1994, aka New Horizons,
well thought out and executed, with six different ship
captains representing six different countries from
which to choose, including one female - this is the
                    keeper of the series)

A new kind of RPG, ported from PC.

You are a sailor captain, to explore the world by move your ship from one port to another, to earn money by trading on products between ports, to become a good member of the castle,...etc

Other than to control your ship to go around, you can make your ships be private or a normal traders, since you may initiate sea war with other ships group.(Close combat also available)

To win the game, you need to gain money and explore the world. To create a road map, or become a true national private, or to make your king happy, according to the character you select. (There are six character leads to different ending, some of their story are related)

The graphics in the game is not very good, but the new game play would make you interest in!

The version 4 expansion are there on market for PC! Try that also!

I read about New Horizons in an old copy of SEGA Visions. I've been looking for it for awhile now.

What this game lacks in graphics is made for with an interesting storyline (Prester John) and creative game play. Grade: B-

Their are 3 New Versions Since "new Horizons" was released on the Super Nintendo
Problem is, the 3 new Versions never made it to american, they are
"New Horizons Special edition" "Gaiden" and "Porto Estero"
If you whanna find more about the series, type in the japanese name "Daikoukai Jidai"

I am still (in 2004) playing the ORIGINAL VERSION on NINTENDO. My best game ended at rank of Count in October 1503; while the character is still only 17 years old. I did this playing with smaller ships loaded with 200 crew each. You can't travel long distances, but the game seems to adjust the tasks asked by the King to shorter runs. To WIN, you must be fighting: Spain, Turkey and Pirates.
