Re: Jammit (Score: 0) by Anonymous on Sunday, July 13 @ 23:07:24 EDT | This is actually a very cool one on one street basketball game. It uses large digitized characters similar to the style used for the Mortal Kombat series on Genesis. And it's absolutely loaded with audio clips of player taunts for a 16-bit cart! Not the brief one word taunts heard in other sports titles, actual trash talk. For example, "I'm gonna charge you like a gold card!". It also has several soundtracks to choose from, mostly hip-hop sounds but not bad for a cart.
Gameplay is more like a one on one versus fighter than it is like NBA Jam or the Charles Barkley endorsed game. You've got several fakes as well as using the d-pad one on one to fake out your opponent. The controls in the one on one matches are very responsive and allow you to put a lot of touch on the ball. There is one round in the tournament mode that requires you to compete free-for-all with two other opponents and it's the only time the controls are a bit sluggish, though it's still playable. You can also shove and elbow your opponent though in some modes there are fouls with free throws. Plus, there is the "jam cam" that switches to a close up of the hoop with very large (though not very animated) characters. Unlike older games that zoomed for slamdunk views, these characters are actually controllable. A good player (or The Judge cpu player) will be able to swat out a poorly executed attempt at dunking the ball.
There are three different characters to choose from, each with different strengths and weaknesses, plus a boss character named The Judge. Unfortunately, The Judge doesn't seem to be a playable character even after beating the game.
The one player game consists of one on one matches where you bet cash from your winnings against the other two standard characters. Lose all your money and you lose the game! Or after winning enough dough, you can play a final game against both opponents in a free for all before going up against The Judge for a final match. There is also a two player mode where you and a friend (or enemy) can go head to head.
Each match is half court which includes the standard "clearing the ball" after a missed shot off the rim. Shots inside the line are worth 1 point while distance shots outside the line are worth 2 points. Besides standard street ball, there are several variations on gameplay. Dunks only, scores that are poison (requiring a 2 point shot to pass it or lose points!), cutthroat, and others.
This is a much more serious take on street ball than NBA Jam or the likes. There are no basketballs on fire, somersault dunks, or other craziness. It does have one fantasy element - some game variations have moving targets you must score from, otherwise it's all for real. Personally, I like this game a lot better than NBA Jam. It takes more skill to play both offense and defense, IMO, and the craziness of Jam just gets old while this, being like reall street ball, doesn't. Plus, the cpu is actually a good opponent unlike Jam's stupid AI that relies on cheapness like last second full court shots and such to keep games close. And Jammit is a fun two player game, though it could have used a few more characters (or at least The Judge) to choose from. If you've got more than two players ready for a game of basketball, go with NBA Live but Jammit is a great game of one on one. |
