Excerpt from Genesis Game Guide by The Scribe

NAME: Mystic Defender
AUTHOR/VENDOR: Shueisya
RELEASED: 1989
TYPE: Action
LANGUAGE: English and Japanese (set console accordingly)

PREMISE: Zareth, henchman of the evil king Zao, has kidnapped
Alexandria, daughter of the supreme deity, and imprisoned
her deep within the ancient Azuchi Castle in Japan. He
plans on using the captive maiden's lifeforce to revive
his fallen master. Enter Joe Yamato, loner and powerful
user, who decides to take Zareth on single-handedly and
stop his plan before it can be completed. Based on a
little-known Japanese anime TV series named Peacock King.

IMPRESSIONS: Appealing but unimpressive graphics, and lackluster
gameplay. Even if you could find a copy, it wouldn't be
                  worth the time. (Rage Games)

VARIATIONS: Kujaki-Oh 2 and Peacock King 2 are the common Japanese
references; also often erroneously referred to as KP Cock
2 by some sources. There were at least two different
anime TV series based on the original premise; this game
was inspired by the second one.

The japanese game base on a popular anime in japan. While the usa/european version change alot on the character and the story.

This is a general horizontal action game, you can try to use a combination of spell to complete the rounds.

The level of this game is between hardmiddle,
the control is easy, as there are not much moves can be made.
The graphics is not very good, but the sounds can get back some score.

to conclude, it is a better game than most of the same types on average. I would recommend you to play the japanese version, which is better on story.

A fun game, yet this game is quite hard and slowpaced, fun but not the best game ever. However, the intro is a nice one in the Japanese version.
