Excerpt from Genesis Game Guide by The Scribe

NAME: Gaiares
AUTHOR/VENDOR: Telnet Japan/Renovation
RELEASED: 1990
TYPE: Shooter
LANGUAGE: English and Japanese (set console accordingly)

PREMISE: Earth has been turned into a wasteland by centuries of
abuse. This is just fine to the galactic terrorist
organization Gulfer, who plan to use all that waste to
make some pretty nasty weapons. Dan Dare, a resourceful
fighter jock, is the underdefended Earth's only hope
                  against this menace.

IMPRESSIONS: The music is nice and catchy. The graphics are somewhat
pixelated, but still give the sensation of flight. Oh,
let's not forget the nifty little grappling hook that
comes with your ship, which you can use to snag your
enemies and suck energy from them, adding to your own
supply - a truly original idea. Even so, this is a game
that only the hardest of hardcore shooter fans might want
just to add to their collection. (Silverdice)

A nice one from Telenet. I wish there were more animations, but with most Telenet games, there's an evil female. Which is a plus ;)

The game itself is quite fun, with the power to absorb ship's attacks and use them yourself. The bosses are big and well designed. From a robotic angel, to a mermaid, to a ghastly figure of death. Nice raster effects, music is pretty good.

The first game to really show off the power of the Genesis and the 8-meg cartridge format. Bosses were huge and the colors were bright. It seemed to take some ideas from Gradius and Thunder Force in character design but still brought in tons of original content. One of the best shooters of the 16-bit era.
