Heres A Good one, play as a team of mutants! Play against the rules! the rle book here is only used to mop up your other oopenments! Bribe the ref, if he treats your team unfairly.. TAKE HIM OUT! Kill the ref! A great game of brute force!

Fun game. Not as fun as the Madden series, but all the stuff you can do is fun. Hell. You can even peg the cheerleaders with an exploding football during half time. Now this concept is great and makes the game worth getting, even if you don't like football games.

A great game loosely based upon the original Madden series of football games. The game engine is similar to the original (through Madden 93) that used "passing windows" to choose a receiver. The major graphical difference was the lack of a 3D effect for the field and gameplay was 7 on 7 instead of 11 on 11. These tradeoffs were no doubt to allow all of the extra on field mayhem as body parts tend to fly everywhere! Control is smooth as it is in the original Madden and it uses a tournament system rather than true league play. It also has the excellent replay (with VCR controls) first seen in the Madden sequels. MLF came out the year before EA's multitap so unfortunately there is no four player support.

Besides the brutal mayhem, this game actually had a few firsts for Genesis football. It featured actual named players (rather than just numbers). It also had injuries (and amusing deaths). No longer could you just repeatedly bash ahead with your star player play after play as in the Madden series. Deaths to star players even carries over to later games in the tournament mode, so it makes it even more crucial to take care of them -- or to know when to sacrifice them!

Perhaps the most unique thing about this game is that against a good opponent, it truly requires a combination of brutality and strategy to win. Simply going all out to kill or just trying to play for points will cost you the game if your opponent knows what he's doing.

The follow up Mutant League Hockey was a poor sequel. I loved EA's NHL Hockey but unlike MLF that played like Madden, MLH was just a cheap knock-off. Still, I would have loved to have seen Mutant League Basketball and Racing that were announced by EA but never released.

The television show was loosely based on these two games and even the proposed ones. Though it had cheap and recycled animation, it actually had some great sports stories built around the idea of brutal mutant sports. It also had some decent voice acting. The series was later chopped up and re-edited into a direct-to-video (VHS) movie that is not bad, either, though I wish they would release the entire series on DVD.

Unfortunately, this is one of the last innovative games by old EA before they went major corporate. I would love to see a Mutant League Football sequel but after the new EA's attitude about games like Thrill Kill, I find it very unlikely.
