Excerpt from Genesis Game Guide by The Scribe

NAME: Phantasy Star series (4 titles)
AUTHOR/VENDOR: Sega
RELEASED: various
TYPE: RPG
LANGUAGE: English, Japanese, and Portuguese

PREMISE: A multigenerational saga that mixes together elements of
the sci-fi, fantasy, strategy, and RPG genres. The
underlying thread that unites the series is that of an
ancient evil which arises in various forms to threaten
the peaceful existence of the inhabitants of the Algo
star system. Time and again it is defeated, only to rise
again in an even more threatening form with each new age,
until a climatic confrontation is forced in the fourth
                  and final installment.

IMPRESSIONS: This is for Sega Genesis/MegaDrive fans what the Final
Fantasy series is for the various Nintendo platforms.
It is an ABSOLUTE MUST if you an RPG fan. The third game
in the series doesn't quite fit, as it deals with a side
story, but the fourth and final installment was such
a huge success that it inspired its own anime TV series
in Japan. Its continued popularity can be judged in part
by the demand for the rare G/MD cart of the first game.
Don't just take my word for it - play the series and see
                  for yourself!

VARIATIONS: Phantasy Star (aka Phantasy Star MD, PSMD - initally
released for the SMS in 1988, rereleased 1993 in a
special anniversary edition for the MegaDrive limited
to just 1000 copies - it is the rarest known commercial
G/MD cart in existence with a current street value of
around US$200 - nevertheless, it's an exact copy of the
                    Japanese SMS game, folks)
Phantasy Star 2 (1989, the direct sequel to the first
game - according to Chochobo's RPG Ranch, it has the
best ending of any game in the series and can hold its
own against PS4 - there also seems to have been a
a variation or derivative with modem support released
in Japan that was documented in Mega Play issue #2)
Phantasy Star 3 - Generations of Doom (1991, released in
Japan under the title Tokino Seishousha - deals with
a side story in the saga, as three generations of
characters interact, marry, and breed to raise a new
crowd to do the same - four different endings based on
                    how the game is played)
Phantasy Star 4 - The End of the Millenium (1993, also
released in the United States under the title The Final
Terror - takes all of the previous games, even PS3 to
some extent, and ties them together into one grand
                    finale)

I would also like to note that the entire series is
available on one big multigame CD in Japanese for the
Sega Saturn - provided you can still find it - and there
is an active campaign underway to get Sega to port this
collection to IBM PC platforms. There are also at least
a dozen or so Game Gear "side story" games, which were
eventually collected and released on two separate discs
in the Game no Can series for the Mega CD in Japan.

According to Steve Snake, Sega did consider porting
one or more of the "regular" Phantasy Star games to the
Sega CD, but nothing ever came of it.

This is, without a doubt, my favorite game series EVER. I love these games so much, I made a site devoted to them, (check it out please;) These games have the best storyline for any game I've ever played. Period. Phantasy Star 4 was probably the first real RPG I ever played, and with that game, I was immediately hooked to RPG's for life, Phantasy Star always being my faves of the bunch. Part 4 is easily the best, part 2 is my second fave, and part 3 isn't much liked by other PS fans, but I love it all the same. If you haven't played any of these games, download em and start playing them NOW, or you will be missing one of the best stories any game has ever had.

Phantasy Star 2 and 4 are by far the best in the series, these games take the original Phantasy Star a step further while supplying new characters and new surroundings at the same time.

The character design is good, the music is great, the story is good in PS2, excellent in PS4. What more can you say about the PS series? PS3 was okay, but it's too bad it was so far off from the other two Genesis releases.

I was anxious for the release of PSO, then I found out that my 9/9/99 DC can't read the disc, and SEGA doesn't seem to care to return my calls. But I've played it on other people's Dreamcasts, and I think a bit of that Sonic Adventure "fruitiness" is in PSO.

i only have 2 and 3, but i was incredibly lucky in that a friend was getting rid of all his video games (such a crime!) and decided to give his most prized ones to me. thusly, PS 2 & 3, ToeJam & Earl, and a few other things came my way...in the nice hard cases and with instruction booklets in excellent condition. i need to get my hands on 4, but 2 is lots of fun (still haven't beat it yet, though!) and 3 isn't bad either, although it definitely does seem quite different from what went before...

Phantasy Star 4 was the best. PS3 was the worst! 1&2 are fine. I have a question for PS2. Which characters should I use? I mean you can have only 4 person in your party but there's more than 4 characters.

Its very refreshing to see people who know of this series and hail it as one of the best ever made. Personally PS4 is my favorite game of all time and it also helped introduce me to the word of japanese anime from the cut scenes and such. Rune is to kewl as is Rika. Hail Phantasy Star. We hope it lives on forever.

As everyone else has mentioned, I believe that PS4 was the epitome of this weirdly named series of RPGs.

Not only was the music incredible (oh my gawd-- I mean listen to the freakin' INTRO!!) but the gameplay was great with combination attacks and strategies. Also, the story was just as moving, if not more, as FF7! Who knew that--well, I won't say it for people that have not finished this game.

Personal side note-- :) It was kinda cool because my final attack on the last boss was the most powerful combination attack, and I did it on accident!

I give it a 9.

Phantasy Star IV is the best jRPGs on SEGA MD and one of the best 16-bit jRPGs, second only to Chrono Trigger (SNES). It even beats the crap out of Final Fantasy III (SNES) in terms of storyline and overall gameplay (FF3 storyline is a bit like mexican or brazillian series and fighting rules are much too complicated to be fun).

2 thumbs up!
